Pre-Med & Biomedical Engineering Summer Programs/Research Internships

SIMR @ Stanford

Description of Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR):

SIMR is an eight-week summer research internship program at Stanford from June 8 to July 30. Students will do hands-on research with a mentor at the Institutes of Medicine at Stanford University of the institute of the two that they selected in their application. Students will all receive a minimum stipend of $500. All expenses are covered (zero cost) except housing and transportation.

Requirements:

  • Must be a current junior or a senior in high school

  • 16 years old or older when the program starts

  • Living and attending a school in the U.S. as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a green card

YSP @ UC Davis

Application Fee: $40 (can be waived)

Acceptance Rate: ~8%

Application Deadline: 3/1/26

Description of Young Scholars Program (YSP):

YSP is a six-week summer research program at UC Davis from June 21 to August 1. Students are paired with a research mentor and research groups to work on their individual project, prepare a research journal paper, and create a symposium presentation. They are also enrolled in five units of University Group Study Credit where they will complete assignments to earn credit. The total cost of this program, including all expenses is $7,500. Fee reduction is available if needed.

Requirements:

  • Must be a current sophomore or junior in high school

  • 16 years old or older when the program starts and not 18 years old when the program ends

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident that live an attend a school in the U.S.

MITES Summer

Description of MITES Summer (MITES):

MITES Summer is a six-week STEM immersion summer program at MIT from late June to early August, where students will take five rigorous courses in subjects like math, science, and humanities. Students will also participate in various events at the MIT campus, including a college fair, lab tours, and seminars. Students will also receive college admission counseling from MIT faculty and a written evaluation from their instructor, which can be added on their college applications. All expenses are covered except transportation to MIT.

Students who come from undeserved backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Requirement:

  • Must be a current junior in high school

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a green card

Description of MITES Semester (MOSTEC):

MITES Semester is similar to MITES Summer, instead MITES Semester is a six-month virtual STEM immersion summer program. Students will take two rigorous science and engineering courses—one project-based and one supplemental core subject. There program is split into two phases: the STEM Immersion phase (June-early August) and the College and Career Prep phase (August-December). Like MITES Summer, students will receive college admission counseling from MIT faculty and a written evaluation from their instructor, which can be added on their college applications. All expenses are covered.

Students who come from undeserved backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

MITES Semester

Description of Johns Hopkins University ISPEED:

ISPEED is a four-week residential summer program at Johns Hopkins where students will explore concepts and challenges in biomedical engineering. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to perform hands-on lab work and computational design to solve real-world problems with great leaders in the field. Students will also earn three college credits from Johns Hopkins University and have the possibility to receive a stipend up to $2,400 if they qualify. All expenses are covered.

Students who come from undeserved backgrounds and have a strong interest in BME are encouraged to apply.

Requirement:

  • Must be a current sophomore or junior in high school

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • At least the age of 15 by the move-in day and not over 18 by the last day of the program

JHU ISPEED

Description of Cornell CATALYST:

CATALYST is a one-week residential summer program at Cornell where students will dive into the fundamentals of engineering majors by a Cornell Engineering faculty member. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to work and present on a research project with faculty members or Cornell students. Students will also have a session to learn more about the admission process. The total cost of the program is $1,450.

Students who come from undeserved backgrounds and have a strong interest in engineering or STEM are encouraged to apply.

Requirement:

  • Must be a rising junior or senior in high school

  • A student residing and currently enrolled in a high school in the U.S.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Cornell CATALYST

Description of Global Health Leaders Conference (GHLC):

GHLC is a virtual summer program that is hosted on multiple days throughout mid-June to mid-July. In this program, students will explore issues regarding public health and medicine through lectures with world leaders. In addition, students will get the opportunity to share their ideas on prompting global health in GHLC’s Student Speaker Series. The total cost of this program is $99.

Students who are interested in global health and public health policy are encouraged to apply.

Requirement:

  • Must be in high school/secondary school

  • Be proficient in English as the conference will be conducted in English

GHLC @ JHU

Description of Stony Brook University’s Simons Summer Research Program (SSRP):

SSRP is a six-week residential summer program at Stony Brook that is hosted from June 29-August 7. In this program, students will join a research group with one of their chosen top 3 research mentors, and produce a research abstract and research poster. In addition, students will get the opportunity to attend research talks and participate in special workshops and event to enhance their skills. Students will typically receive a stipend of $1,000. The total cost of this program is $2,450.

Students who are interested in STEM and hands-on research work are encouraged to apply.

Requirement:

  • Must be a current junior in high school

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a green card

  • Must be 16 years old by the start of the program

  • Must be nominated by your school by January 30th, 2026

Stony Brook SSRP

Description of Research in Science and Engineering (RISE) Internship Program :

RISE is a six-week residential program at Boston University that is hosted from June 28-August 7. In this program, students will spend 40 hours per week on hands-on research designed by their mentor based on the area of their choice. In addition, students will get the opportunity once a week to attend workshops to build their academic and professional skills. At the end of the program, students will present their research project at the Poster Symposium. The total cost of the program varies depending on the amount of meals per week and student health visits (~$11,000).

Students who are interested in hands-on research are encouraged to apply.

Requirement:

  • Must be a rising senior in high school

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a green card
