Caffeine is pretty popular, especially in teens and young adults to wake them up and pull all-nighters. Caffeine is commonly found in coffee, tea, energy, drinks, soda, etc. Caffeine negatively affects your heart, depending on the caffeine intake.


Different Types of Caffeine:

  • Coffee: 1 cup of brewed coffee typically has 96 mg of caffeine. Instant coffee is lighter with 62 mg of caffeine.

  • Tea: 1 cup of tea (any kind) contains 20-50 mg of caffeine

  • Energy drinks: 1 can (16 fl oz) contains around 80-200 mg of caffeine

  • Sodas: 1 cup contains around 40 mg of caffeine, however some sodas do not contain caffeine


Effects of Caffeine on the Heart:

  • Releasing stress hormones, which increases the heart rate and blood pressure

  • Large consumption of caffeine can make people feel their heart is racing or skipping beats, which could be life-threatening

  • Caffeine affects everyone’s heart differently depending on how sensitive one’s body is to caffeine


Risks of Overconsumption:

  • Consuming too much caffeine can dangerously raise heart rate and blood pressure

  • People with high blood pressure can double their chances of heart-related death if they drink two or more cups of coffee daily

  • Individuals with cardiovascular diseases should be cautious when consuming caffeine

  • Signs of overconsumption: palpitations, racing heartbeat, high blood pressure, poor sleep, and fidgeting

Even though caffeine can wake you up, it can cause too much damage to the heart, especially to individuals with heart problems. To enjoy caffeine safely, stick to around 400 mg of caffeine per day and pay attention to your body.
