What is Atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is a common heart condition where arteries become narrow and stiff over time, causing less blood flow. It is also referred to as “plaque buildup in the arteries” that consists of fatty substances from cholesterol, sodium, etc; it can lead to other cardiovascular issues like heart attacks, coronary artery disease, and etc. It is important to understand what atherosclerosis is and how to prevent it.
Types of Hardening of Arteries:
Atherosclerosis: Plaque buildup inside the arteries
Arteriosclerosis: Thickening of arterioles (small arteries), mostly due to hypertension
Monckeberg’s sclerosis: Calcium deposits in the middle layer of larger arteries, making them rigid
Causes of Atherosclerosis:
High Cholesterol Level, LDL levels (Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) > 100
High Blood Pressure, damages artery walls
Smoking, increase plaque formation
Diabetes/High Blood Sugar, damages blood vessels and inflames heart
Family history of heart conditions
Symptoms of Atherosclerosis:
Chest pain or angina
Weakness, fatigue, or shortness of breath
Numbness and pain in arms or legs
Difficult speaking or temporary vision loss
Prevention of Atherosclerosis:
Maintain a healthy lifestyle, whether it is having a healthy diet or constantly exercising
Monitor cholesterol, glucose and sodium levels, and blood pressure
Check up with your doctors to check for any early signs
Atherosclerosis is a condition that tends to remain silent until it becomes dangerous. You can take action through your efforts of maintaining a great lifestyle, checking with doctors, and ensuring you aren’t doing anything that might cause atherosclerosis to reduce the risk of other CVDs.
